5 Things to Check If Your AC Stops Working

It’s a hot summer day, and you’re ready to settle down and relax inside your Round Rock home—until your air conditioner (AC) goes out suddenly.

Instead of going straight into panic mode, think about what you can do to get your equipment working.

5 Tips to Keep Your AC Running

If your air conditioner system suddenly breaks down, here are a couple of areas to check before scheduling a repair call:

  1. Check your thermostat.

When your air conditioner stops running, head right over to your thermostat. Correcting the issue could be as simple as switching your thermostat setting from Auto to On to leave the fan running. And—it might seem obvious—but make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and not Heat! That happens more than you think. Your thermostat may also need new batteries.
  2. Check the breaker box.

Your air conditioner may have tripped a breaker. If it has, you can switch it back on and wait to see if your AC goes back on.

If it does not look tripped or you are uncertain if it is, call AirCo Mechanical. We also provide electrical services in addition to HVAC services. We can inspect all your equipment and determine if your breaker box is the issue.

  1. Check your airflow.

If your air conditioner is on, but you don’t feel any air coming out, you could be dealing with improper airflow. Check to see if anything (furniture, boxes) is blocking the airflow from your vents. The solution could be as simple as moving over a desk or a bed.

Check outside by your outdoor unit for any overgrown bushes, trees, leaves, or sticks that could block airflow to your evaporator to cool and prevent your AC from cooling your Round Rock home. Always keep the area surrounding your outdoor unit clean and free from any accumulation of debris.

  1. Check your air filter.

A clean filter makes life easier on your AC unit while maintaining your home’s indoor air quality (IAQ). Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on when to change or clean your system’s filter to get the best results from your equipment. Change it more often if you have pets or someone in the household has respiratory issues.
  1. Schedule a tune-up.

According to the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA), routine professional maintenance can decrease the chances of a breakdown by up to 95 percent! Stay proactive and schedule annual tune-ups to avoid pesky problems with your AC or furnace.

When you skip a critical maintenance visit, you risk having a minor problem becoming a more expensive issue to repair. Stay on track with routine maintenance visits so that our technicians can address minor issues on the spot. You will enjoy peace of mind and reduce the risk of your equipment breaking down unexpectedly.

It’s never too late to schedule a maintenance visit. Call our experts, and we will perform a thorough maintenance visit, inspect your equipment for any existing problems, and address them for you!
